TTU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line on Saturday, linking Mizoram’s capital Aizawl with India’s railway network for the first time. This marks a major step in improving connectivity for the state and the Northeast.

The new line is being seen as more than just a transport link. It will improve trade, tourism, and access to education and healthcare. It is also expected to create jobs in travel, hospitality, and related sectors.

Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line Brings Aizawl on the Rail Map

The Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line is 51.38 km long. It has 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges, built under difficult geological conditions. The total project cost is around ₹8,070 crore.

This railway line connects Aizawl with Silchar in Assam, and from there to the wider Indian network. The project finally brings Mizoram’s capital city onto India’s railway map.

Benefits of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line

The new line gives farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs of Mizoram easier access to markets across India. Goods can now be transported faster and at lower cost.

Students and patients will be able to reach universities and hospitals in other states more conveniently. The tourism sector in Mizoram is also expected to grow, as the state becomes more accessible by rail.

New Train Services from Sairang

Along with the inauguration of the railway line, the Prime Minister flagged off Mizoram’s first Rajdhani Express. The train will run from Sairang to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal.

The Prime Minister also launched two more trains:

  • Sairang–Guwahati Express
  • Sairang–Kolkata Express

Sairang station, located 22 km from Aizawl, will now act as a gateway for Mizoram.

Regional and National Impact

According to the Prime Minister, the project will not only support Mizoram’s economy but also strengthen regional integration. The line is part of India’s broader ‘Act East’ policy, aimed at connecting the Northeast with Southeast Asia through infrastructure and trade projects.

Projects like the Kaladan multimodal transit project, along with the new rail link, are designed to make Mizoram a vital corridor for regional connectivity.

From Neglect to Growth

The Prime Minister said political parties had neglected the Northeast in the past for vote bank politics. He stressed that over the last decade, the Centre has consistently worked to integrate the region into the mainstream.

The Northeast now has more than 4,500 startups and 25 incubators. It is emerging as an important hub for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Modi noted that Mizoram has always contributed to India’s nation-building efforts, whether in the freedom movement or in development. He called the launch of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line a historic day for the state.
