TTU: The first phase of the Noida Airport in Jewar will open on October 30. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu made the announcement during an event at Hindon airport in Ghaziabad.

Commercial operations are expected to begin within 45 days of the inauguration. At least 10 cities will be connected in the initial phase.

The minister said the new airport will serve both passenger and cargo operations. It will become an important hub for the National Capital Region.

Facilities in the First Phase

The first phase will have one runway and a passenger terminal. The terminal has a designed capacity of 12 million passengers per year. Officials expect about six million passengers in the first year of operation.

Over time, the project will expand to four phases, eventually handling up to 70 million passengers annually.

The airport site covers 1,334 hectares. It will be the second commercial airport for the region, after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Construction Progress

Work on the Noida Airport in Jewar has reached its final stage. The 3,900-metre runway is complete. The ATC tower is ready. The terminal structure is almost finished.

Aerobridges are in place. Baggage handling systems and e-gates have been installed. Interior work such as seating, lighting, and toilets is also nearly complete.

The airport concessionaire, Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), confirmed that most aeronautical infrastructure is ready. Roofing work on the terminal is complete. Technical installations are ongoing.

The Airports Authority of India has started commissioning systems in the ATC tower. Trials are also being conducted to check baggage systems, security equipment, check-in counters, and boarding gates.

Clearances and Next Steps

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has already given clearance for airside infrastructure. Now, two major steps are pending. First, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) must issue the aerodrome licence. Second, airlines will announce their flight routes from the airport.

Airlines Showing Interest

Airlines are preparing to use Jewar. IndiGo carried out a test flight last December and has signed an MoU to serve as the launch carrier. Akasa Air has also committed to building operations at the new airport.

Flights to Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata are likely in the first phase.

Delays in the Project

The project has seen delays in the past. It was earlier planned for September 2024 and later shifted to mid-2025. To speed up work, the Uttar Pradesh government imposed a daily penalty of ₹10 lakh on the concessionaire from January this year. With the project now close to completion, officials say the timeline is on track.

Passenger-Friendly Plans

The minister also spoke about new facilities for air travellers across India. Free Wi-Fi will be available at all airports within the next two months. Library facilities and children’s zones are also planned.

At Hindon airport, expansion plans are under discussion. The terminal has reached capacity, and there is a proposal to add more parking bays for aircraft.
