TTU: If you are planning Mussoorie travel, you may soon need to complete an online check-in before entering the town. Authorities in Uttarakhand are working on a new rule that aims to manage tourist flow during busy times.
Mussoorie is a popular destination, especially for those coming from Delhi and Dehradun. Its accessibility makes it a frequent choice for weekend travel. Due to the growing number of visitors, officials are taking steps to reduce traffic problems.
Why Online Check-In Is Being Introduced for Mussoorie Travel
Between 2022 and 2024, Mussoorie saw a large increase in tourist numbers. In 2022, over 11 lakh people visited. That number went up to 21 lakh in 2024.
This sharp rise caused traffic congestion, especially during holidays. To reduce the pressure, the tourism department plans to launch a pre-registration system. The process will be active during peak seasons, such as summer vacations, winter breaks, and long weekends.
What You Need To Know Before Entering Mussoorie
If the rule comes into effect, all travellers must register online before entering Mussoorie. They will need to provide:
- Contact details
- Vehicle number
- Dates of travel
- Proof of accommodation
After submitting the form, travellers will receive a One-Time Password (OTP). Once verified, a QR code will be issued.
The QR code must be shown at one of the three main checkpoints:
- Kempty Falls
- Kuthal Gate
- Kimadi
Domestic tourists will receive the code via SMS. International travellers will get it by email. No tourist will be allowed entry without a valid QR code.
Authorities will also use technology to support the system. Cameras and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) tools will be set up at entry points. These will help verify vehicle details and track real-time traffic.
What Officials Have Shared
Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Singh Garbyal explained the plan. He said that the system would apply only during high-traffic times. “The problem of overcrowding and long traffic jams is only during the peak season. So there’s no point in having a year-round pre-registration system,” he said in a recent interview with The Times of India.
Officials also met with local stakeholders in Mussoorie to review the plan. During the meeting, suggestions such as one-way road systems were discussed. These could help ease traffic during busy seasons.
