TTU: China has announced an expansion of its visa-free transit policy to revive its tourism sector. The revised policy now allows eligible travelers to stay for up to 10 days (240 hours) without a visa, a significant increase from the earlier limit of 72 to 144 hours.

Key Details of Visa-Free Transit in China

This policy applies to travelers from 54 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia, and Canada. Visitors can use visa-free transit when traveling to a third destination via China. The program covers 60 ports across 24 provinces, enabling tourists to explore specific regions during their transit.

For instance, passengers arriving in Shanghai can visit the broader Shanghai area, including Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. However, restrictions still apply in certain areas like Tibet, where additional permits are mandatory for foreign visitors.

Why the Visa-Free Transit Policy Matters

The expansion of visa-free transit in China aligns with efforts to boost inbound tourism after COVID-19. In 2023, China reopened its borders following three years of strict pandemic measures. This policy aims to attract more international visitors and enhance their travel experience.

Recent data highlights the impact of such initiatives. In the third quarter of 2024, over 8.2 million international tourists visited China, marking a 48.8% year-over-year increase. Among these, 78.6% of travelers used the visa-free transit program.

Other Changes to Visa Rules

China has also eased travel restrictions for Shenzhen residents. Since December 1, they can apply for multiple-entry visas to Hong Kong. Previously, they were limited to one trip per week due to concerns over parallel trading. Now, the revised rule restores unlimited visits, first introduced in 2009, facilitating smoother travel and business exchanges between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Additionally, citizens of 38 countries, including France, Malaysia, and New Zealand, can visit China for up to 30 days without a visa. The United States, however, is not on this list. Still, the visa application process for Americans has been streamlined since 2023 to encourage travel.

Broader Efforts to Boost Tourism

Apart from visa changes, China is focusing on improving the overall travel experience. Steps include upgrading infrastructure, streamlining procedures, and addressing common challenges faced by international tourists.

The expanded visa-free transit in China is part of a larger strategy to reestablish the country as a top global destination. By making travel more convenient, China aims to attract more visitors and strengthen its tourism sector in the post-pandemic era.
