TTU: Thiruvananthapuram recently achieved a significant milestone by winning the UN-Shanghai Global Sustainability Award. This makes it the first Indian city to receive this honor, presented by UN Habitat and the Shanghai Municipality. The award celebrates cities for their success in sustainable practices, effective governance, and innovative urban solutions.
The award ceremony took place in Alexandria, Egypt. Mayor Arya Rajendran and Smart City Thiruvananthapuram CEO Rahul Sharma accepted the award on behalf of the city.
Key Achievements Leading to the Global Sustainability Award
Thiruvananthapuram stood out from several competing cities worldwide for its unique approach to sustainability. Its initiatives address urban challenges by focusing on environmental preservation, community involvement, and renewable energy. This year, the award recognized five cities, including Agadir (Morocco), Melbourne (Australia), Doha (Qatar), and Iztapalapa (Mexico).
