TTU: Himachal Pradesh, a state of gently sloping hills and stunning landscapes, witnessed snowfall in the higher reaches during the past 24 hours. As per the latest report by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), districts like Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kangra, Bilaspur, Una, and Hamirpur are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Moreover, the districts of Sirmaur, Bilaspur, and Solan could also witness hail along with the rainfall.

Although heavy snowfall has caused difficulties in travelling for people, the unusual whiteout offered a delightful sight to many. But, the inclement weather proved to be quite a challenge for a few tourists from Delhi, who were trapped in heavy snowfall in Lahaul and Spiti. Fortunately, they were rescued in time, and no untoward incident was reported.

The snowfall also resulted in over 500 vehicles getting stranded between Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, and Dhundi in Himachal Pradesh. However, prompt action was taken by the Kullu District Police, who supervised the rescue operation on Monday night as temperatures dropped significantly. The commuters were instructed to avoid using their brakes and to go slowly in first gear to prevent skidding.

A knowledgeable official said that significant snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has resulted in the closure of 14 roadways, including two national highways. These roads include stretches between the north portal of Atal Tunnel to Darcha, Darcha to Shinkula to Zanskar, Koksar to Losar, and Tandi to Kadhu Nullah. According to the emergency operation centre, six of the 14 closed roads are in the Lahaul and Spiti district, four are in Kullu, and the remaining seven are in other regions of the state.

The meteorological department has issued an alert to the tourists and the locals to be cautious while venturing out and avoid the affected areas as much as possible. Authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of the people. It is advised to plan the travel accordingly and check the weather conditions before stepping out.
