Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Safari May Start in October

TTU: The Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Safari is expected to begin in October. Officials from the forest department said the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is reviewing the Tiger Conservation Plan (TCP). After approval, safaris will be allowed in the reserve’s core zone.

NTCA Review of the Plan

The TCP has already been submitted for clearance. A four-member NTCA team examined the proposal. According to officials, no further corrections were asked for, and approval is expected soon. Once cleared, the plan will permit limited tiger safaris in selected areas of the reserve.

Main Features of the Conservation Plan

The Tiger Conservation Plan includes:

  • Regular monitoring of wildlife
  • Tracking of species population
  • Conflict management between humans and animals
  • Water and habitat improvement
  • Strict regulation of eco-tourism activities

Only 20% of the reserve will open for visitors. This is to ensure that tourism does not disturb wildlife.

About Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve

Ramgarh Vishdhari became Rajasthan’s fourth tiger reserve in May 2022. It was also added as India’s 52nd tiger reserve.

  • Total area: 1,501.89 sq km
  • Core zone: 481.90 sq km
  • Buffer zone: 1,019.98 sq km

At present, the reserve has six tigers — two adult males, one adult female, one young male, and two cubs.

Planned Safari Routes

The first proposed safari route will start from the Peepkhoda entry gate in Naitpur and lead to the core zone. More routes will be added later once the TCP is in effect.

Officials are planning to create four safari zones. Carrying capacity will be fixed to avoid pressure on the reserve. In addition, eight villages may be shifted outside the reserve boundaries to reduce human-wildlife conflicts.

History of the Forest

After Independence, the forest came under the Rajasthan government. In 1982, part of it was declared as Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary under the Rajasthan Wild Animals and Birds Protection Act, 1951. Tigers vanished from the sanctuary in 1999, but with protection measures, their numbers are returning.
