TTU: Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte has once again asked the Central government to include Goa under the visa-on-arrival scheme. He raised this issue during the Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly. The minister said that Goa is seeing a steady rise in international tourist arrivals. He believes that offering visa on arrival in Goa will make travel easier for these visitors.
The minister explained that better global air connectivity and focused promotional efforts have opened new markets. Countries like Kazakhstan, Poland, and Uzbekistan are showing growing interest in Goa as a tourist destination.
Current Visa-on-Arrival Policy
At present, only citizens of Japan, South Korea, the UAE, and Russia can get a visa on arrival in India. This service is available only at six metro airports. Goa is not included in this list, even though its connectivity has improved and the number of international tourists is rising.
Khaunte stated that he had already brought this matter to the attention of the Union Civil Aviation Minister. He plans to raise it with the Union Home Minister as well. The state government has also sent communications to the Ministry of External Affairs.
“We are pursuing this matter actively,” said the minister. He mentioned that more discussions would take place with the Chief Minister and other departments once the Assembly session ends.
Why Visa on Arrival in Goa is Needed
The minister believes that introducing visa on arrival in Goa will help make travel easier for tourists. He also acknowledged that there are operational challenges in implementing this policy. However, he feels that a joint effort by the Centre, state government, and stakeholders can provide a way forward.
Khaunte highlighted that tourists from non-traditional markets are now visiting Goa in larger numbers. This shift is a result of Goa’s international outreach and tourism campaigns.
Tech Support for Tourism Growth
To support policy decisions, the Tourism Department is using a digital platform called the Tourism Information Management Enterprise (TIME). This platform collects real-time data on visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy. All registered hotels and accommodations in Goa must use TIME to submit guest check-in and occupancy details.
The minister said that TIME helps track tourism trends and supports better planning. Data collected from this platform will guide future decisions and allow Goa to meet changing travel demands.
Khaunte remains hopeful that the Centre will consider Goa’s request. He said that visa on arrival in Goa can bring long-term benefits to the state’s tourism industry and improve the overall travel experience for foreign visitors.
