TTU: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a weather update covering the period from May 18 to May 24, 2025. The update shows two major weather patterns across the country. Southern and northeastern states will receive heavy rainfall, while northern and central regions will face extreme heat.

IMD Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in Southern and Northeastern States

States in southern India, including Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh, will likely face thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds throughout the week. The IMD alert for Karnataka remains in effect. The alert includes Bengaluru and 23 other districts, where waterlogging and traffic disruptions may happen due to continuous rainfall.

The IMD has asked people in these regions to prepare for local flooding, especially in urban areas. Travelers and residents should follow local announcements and plan accordingly.

In the northeast, states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim will also face light to moderate rain with isolated cases of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. These weather conditions could lead to landslides in hilly areas and disrupt communication and transport.

The IMD has asked people living in or traveling to these areas to remain cautious. Residents are advised to keep checking local weather bulletins and take safety steps in advance.

IMD Alert: Heatwave in Northern and Central India

While rain is affecting the south and northeast, northern and central India continue to battle a severe heatwave. Uttar Pradesh cities like Banda, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Jhansi, and Varanasi are seeing temperatures above 45°C. Banda recorded a peak of 46.2°C.

In Rajasthan, Sriganganagar also touched 46°C. The IMD has marked these areas under heatwave conditions for the entire forecast period.

These high temperatures can cause heatstroke and other health problems. Children, the elderly, and people who work outside are at higher risk. The IMD suggests avoiding exposure to the sun during peak hours. People should drink water often and seek medical help if they feel dizzy, weak, or sick.

Precautionary Steps for People in Affected Areas

People in rain-affected states should:

  • Avoid stepping out during heavy rain.
  • Stay away from flood-prone areas.
  • Keep emergency supplies ready.
  • Follow local updates for transport and electricity status.

People in heat-affected areas should:

  • Drink enough water.
  • Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Wear light and breathable clothing.
  • Employers should provide shade and water for workers.

Stay Updated with IMD Bulletins

To stay safe, the public should check daily weather reports. The official IMD website and local weather offices offer timely updates. The situation may change quickly, so regular monitoring is necessary.

The IMD alert for this week shows how varied India’s weather can be—rain in one part, and heat in another. Timely action and awareness will help people deal with these conditions safely.
